FAQ
When can I join a team?
Teams enroll on a rolling basis, meaning you can join at anytime! To join Team 1, you will need to complete our beginner series sequence (three 4-week series) unless you start during a beginner open enrollment period, in which case you don’t need any experience to join. This occurs in September and March. So, if you are an absolute beginner and you want to start in September or March, you can join Team 1 immediately.
Am I locked in for the entire year when I sign up for a team?
Team memberships are flexible. Members can pause or cancel their membership at anytime. Past students have paused for months at a time for vacations or life situations and then resumed when the time was right for them. Just send a message to teams@salsacontodo.com to get your membership sorted.
How do I advance to the next team level?
Typically, students will stay in a team for a year before moving to the next level. Each level has entry requirements and students must demonstrate proficiency to gain access to the next level team. Sometimes instructors will move students to different team levels as they see fit, but ask your instructor for a level evaluation if you want to advance sooner.
I did the entire swing program at a different school. What team should I aim to do at Swing Dance SCT?
Typically, swing programs in the US run about 9-12 months long and get most students to a solid intermediate level, about the equivalent of doing 12 months of Team 1. As such, these students are typically placed into Team 2. But a team placement evaluation with an instructor is the most surefire way to get placed on the team appropriate for where you are in your dance journey.
Can I learn both lead and follow on teams?
Yes, you can! It is very common to see Team 2 leads learning to follow in Team 1 and vice versa. A perk of your membership is that you can attend any team below your assigned team level. This is great for learning the opposite role but also for refreshing your technique.
I’m used to swing programs that have monthly series. Do teams work in a similar way?
Not quite! Because teams are continuous, we have a lot more flexibility. On teams, we will study particular topics in a “module”. But the module can be anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks long, depending on the topic and the needs of the class. In essence, team classes are tailored to those in the class so that you get what you need to advance in your dance journey in the most efficient way possible. And this is only possible because teams don’t operate like monthly series.
